BIOGRAPHY of ESTHER LEWARS, Ed.S. Advisor, Instructor, Coach. Esther Lewars is a lifelong learner and educator. She values being helpful, creative, and authentic. She is a Newark Board of Education (NBOE) Supervisor, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Adjunct Professor, City of Newark Caribbean Commissioner, and Google for Education Certified Trainer. She is also the founder of Vernov Technology Group, LLC, which provides technology training and digital services. As a 21-year NBOE employee, she spent 18 years training teachers how to integrate technology in the classroom and providing computer instruction to students. Esther studied Information Systems at Rutgers University and NJIT. She was the Secretary and President of the West Indian Students Association at Rutgers University. She later obtained her MA in Computing in Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Most recently she graduated from Seton Hall University with an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree in Education, Leadership, Management, and Policy. Her greatest professional experience was presenting at the 2018 Google Faculty Institute in Sunnyvale, California. Her biggest impact involves leading the 2017-2018 exploratory revision of the New Jersey Department of Education Students Learning Technology Standards to include Computer Science for all K-12 students. Her college years made her the perfect candidate to advocate for computer science for all students, especially black females. Esther believes that all students should enter college with the skills needed to confidently enroll in a programming class or decide on a tech-related major. Her greatest reward is seeing the success of her former Newark students and promoting her Jamaican/Caribbean culture. As the Caribbean Commission Public Relations Officer, she has organized celebratory milestones such as the Jamaica 60th Independence Flag Raising at Newark City Hall. She also hosts a television program on Newark TV/Channel 78 where she discusses topics geared toward Caribbean residents. Esther is the author of My Ultimate Self, How Death Became My Motivator. She is the proud mother of two amazing school-aged children, a rising ninth-grade son and a 12th-grade daughter. To her younger self she says “remain grateful, love, and believe in yourself. Challenges fuel our energy and drive us to greater pursuit of our intended purpose. It will all be okay.”

BIOGRAPHY of SHEILA E. SMALL, ESQ., PLLC Sheila E. Small is a seasoned attorney who practices out of her law office in New Rochelle, New York in the areas of real estate, immigration, business-corporate law, adoptions, divorce, and estate matters; and recently served as an Administrative Law Judge for the City of New York. Ms. Small developed a specialty in cooperative law and is a pillar in the Housing Development Fund Cooperative (HDFC) legal community due to her experience, service, and dedication. The HDFC is a unique limited equity cooperative, created by the law for low to median income shareholders. Ms. Small has provided legal services to HDFC(s) for over 30 years and is proficient in interpreting HDFC laws, rules, regulations, and procedures. She is a passionate advocate of justice and equality for the disenfranchised, marginalized and the victimized. She has represented well over five hundred HDFC(s) since 1990. Since that time, Ms. Small has labored tirelessly addressing the needs of HDFC(s), which are different and unique from the non-HDFC cooperative. While managing her law office, Ms. Small has proven to be an accomplished businesswoman, as a licensed real estate broker and mortgage broker. She speaks fluent Spanish and has a working knowledge of Portuguese. She has studied and lived in Spain, traveled to Cuba, Ecuador, the Galapagos Islands, Peru, Uruguay, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Albania, Montenegro, Greece, and Croatia; and worked on projects to improve the lives of minority communities in the South American countries of Uruguay, Venezuela, and Peru. She founded a non-profit organization to highlight the contributions of communities of African descent in South and Central America. Ms. Small’s dedication to service began in her formative years as a member of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee in middle school. In college, she worked with projects to end South African apartheid and universal discrimination and injustice. Subsequently, she worked diligently for over ten years with the Sea Island Committee of City College in Harlem to raise funds and awareness of the issues affecting victims of hurricane Hugo, and worked with Sea Island residents in South Carolina who were threatened with property losses due to real estate development and discriminatory practices. A strong proponent of community empowerment, Ms. Small works diligently with her neighborhood association, having served as its Vice-President and current President. She served on the Board of Commissioners of the New Rochelle Municipal Housing Authority and was appointed Chairperson, where she has served for the nineteen years to improve the living conditions for residents of public housing. She served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Credit Union of the Greater Centennial A.M.E. Zion Church. She worked with District 3 Councilman James Stowe on various issues and projects including, the Sex Offender Notification Policy and Round Table Discussions with the New Rochelle Police Department on Gang related activities. In 2010, Ms. Small ran for City Council in District 3, and placed second. An impassioned advocate of education, Ms. Small has taught business math, typing and business English to adult students in federally funded business schools and programs; and voluntarily taught Spanish, to elementary through high school students while leading a debate club and double dutch team for the students, which led to her receiving numerous honors and awards in recognition of her devotion to exemplary educational community leadership.
